Wisconsin Officials' Training Clinic

Itinerary:
8:30-9:00 Registration/Group Formation/Introduction
9:00 - 9:45 Session I
9:45 - 10:30 Session II
10:30 - 11:15 Session III
11:15 - 12:00 Session IV
12:00 - 1:00 Lunch
1:30 Rules Interpretation Meeting
All officials will be divided into three groups. Each group will be lead by 1-2 master level, state experienced official(s). Groups will be arranged into a heterogeneous mixture of officials of all classifications. The day will be subdivided into 4 – 45 minute sessions. Each group will rotate through Sessions 1-3, then end with Session 4 as one large group. Lunch may be purchased at the KI Center. A rules interpretation meeting will follow the clinic at 1:30 PM.
Curriculum:
All situations will be demonstrated on a wrestling mat by group participants as facilitated by the group leader. The participants are encouraged to come up with examples/questions that pertain to the topic.
Session 1:
Line Call Standardization / Establishing Control / Pinning Situations
• Line Call Standardization – determining “out of bounds” – When are both contestants out of bounds?
• “Neutral position” out of bounds – demonstrating a variety of situations that occur (on the out of bounds line) while wrestlers are in the neutral position and actively pursuing takedowns.
• “Mat wrestling” out of bounds – demonstrating a variety of situations that occur while one wrestler is in control and the other is being controlled down on the mat.
• “Pinning combinations” out of bounds – when are wrestlers “in or out of bounds” while in a pinning combination on the edge of the mat
• Establishing Control – When is control established in the following situational wrestling?
• “Neutral Position”– When is it a takedown?
• One hand on the mat / both hands on the mat
• One knee on the mat / both knees on the mat
• One hand on the mat not supporting body weight
• One hand and one knee on the mat
• Wheel barrow situations
• How much reaction time is needed before the TD is secured?
• Takedowns at the edge of the mat – one wrestler in bounds / one out
• Controlled Wrestling
• Reversal vs. escape (standing vs. on the mat) / as going out of bounds
• Loss of control
• Edge of the mat reversals / escapes
• When does controlled wrestling become stalling?
• Pinning situations – when should you begin counting near fall?
• Shoulder blade / scapula position
• 45 degree angle
• Head bridges
• Weight on one elbow vs. both elbows vs. weight supported by hands
• Defensive wrestler putting him/herself on back
Session 2:
Illegal Holds / Technical Violations
• Illegal Holds – All 25 illegal holds will be demonstrated and discussed (emphasis on head locks)
• Hands to the face
• Technical Violations – All 7 technical violations will be discussed and demonstrated where applicable
• Starting position – what to look for / overlook
• Emphasis will be placed on locked hands and the different situations that occur during locked hands
• “Reaction time” as it relates to locked hands
• Delayed calls – how long should a call be delayed in a locked hands situation
• Special emphasis on Fleeing the Mat / forcing opponent off mat – what to look for / when to call
Session 3:
Stalling / Mechanics
• Stalling (wrestling aggressively)
• Consistency
• Neutral position
• Playing the edge
• Avoiding contact
• Prevent opponent from returning inbounds
• Pursuing takedowns
• Delaying match
• Controlled position
• Heel to buttocks of defensive wrestler
• Riding – when does it become stalling??
• Grasping legs and arms
• Pinning situations
• Guillotine and either wrestler stands
• Defensive wrestler comes to feet and offensive wrestler stalls (do not stop to award)
• Delaying match
• Mechanics
• Positioning
• Awarding points
• Watching wrestlers at all times
• Mat presence / confidence
Session 4:
Large Group Discussion (Auditorium)
• Professionalism
• Before / during / after match
• Dealing with coaches during the competition
• Assistant referees
• Role / Goal
• Communication
• Mechanics / Positioning
• Questions and Answer session, situations, etc.
• Discussion of clinic format, suggestions, recommendations
